What…Commercial Only!? From the Desk of Martin Lunde

What…Commercial Only!? March 11, 2021 At the present time GARN® WHS equipment can only be sold for commercial use, and not residential applications in the US because it has not received a final certification from the EPA. Therefore GARN WHS equipment can be sold for use in commercial, industrial, institutional, small business, shop, process heat, farm outbuilding facilities, etc. I believe you deserve an explanation as to why this is the case. So grab some hot coffee, a sticky warm donut, sit back and follow with me as I explain the convoluted thinking behind this decision by the EPA....

Firebrick Rating and Availability – December 2020

Posted on Dec 6, 2020

Both the #1 and #2 Hi-duty splits can be purchased online from the GARN store. Each GARN® WHS unit has a combination of #1 and #2 brick splits. #1 splits are the thinner 4.5” x 9”x 1.25” brick that stand on edge along the sides of the combustion chamber. The #2 splits are the thicker 4.5”x 9”x 2” brick that lie transversely on the bottom of the combustion chamber. Because of the high temperatures experienced in the combustion chamber only Hi-duty firebrick (rated to 2,700 F or higher) are recommended. All brick sold in the GARN store have been upgraded by our supplier to a maximum service...

At the present time GARN WHS units cannot be sold for residential heating in the US. They can only be sold for any nonresidential purpose such as commercial, industrial, small business, shop, process heat or farm outbuilding projects, etc. Both GARN WHS models WHS 1500 and WHS 2000 have lower particulate emissions than allowed under the present EPA emission limits, and were initially approved by the EPA. Revisiting Ernie’s GARN WHS-2000

Posted on Apr 13, 2016

On April 5th we revisited GARN WHS owner Ernie of YouTube fame. We wanted to see how Ernie was doing with his 25 year old unit.   Ernie’s GARN WHS-2000 in 2016   Ernie’s WHS-2000 in 2000 His unit is now 25 years old with no major problems. His unit burns as well in 2016 as it did in 1991 when it was installed. He has never had creosote. He heats 5,100 sq ft using about 11 cords of marginal quality cordwood per year. He has eliminated the purchase of 50,000 gallons of heating oil (2000 gallons/year). He remains healthy because of his wood cutting efforts. We asked Ernie...

The Cost of Oil

Posted on Dec 11, 2014

It’s December 2014 and the price of oil (and gasoline) has dropped about 40% from $107/barrel to about $61/barrel, within the last 6 months. Why? There are a number of reasons floating about, including: A worldwide drop in gasoline demand due to a lethargic world economy Lower demand due to cars that get better mileage An excess US supply due to North Dakota fracking The Arab states wanting to maintain market share by “squeezing out” the smaller producers, especially those in North America (fracking and tar sands). A US lead attempt to “control” Putin and his nefarious goals by devaluing the...
